About the Maguri-Racatau comune
It's the largest comune in the Cluj county. From the territorial point of view, it stretches over 286.95 sq km in the area of Mt. Gilau - Great Mountain (Muntele Gilau - Muntele Mare). The population is small, in comparison to the surface, and it's number is declining. The settlements, scattered throughout the area or grouped in very small villages, are established near the crystal-clear streams of Somesul Rece or its afluents, at an altitude of 1100 - 1300 meters. The comune is comprised of 3 villages: Maguri - Racatau - situated at a distance of 45km off Cluj Napoca, the largest village of the comune, Maguri village and Muntele Rece village.
Historical proofs
The first written document to prove the existence of this settlement is dated back in 1724. The first name of this settlement was Magura Alpestris (a roman name). The inhabitants are recorded in history for their role in the paisant riot lead by Horea, Closca and Crisan and in the armies lead by Avram Iancu in the revolution from 1848-1849 in the Apuseni Mountains.
Demographics
The population, as per last census, was 2413 inhabitants, out of which 99.84% are Romanians, 0.08% Hungarians, 0.04% Germans and 0.04% other nationalities.
Economy
Due to harsh conditions, agriculture is poorly represented by the potato culture and animal breading. In the secondary economy, wood exploitation and processing is the main activity in this area.
